ROASTERS HIT THE MARK AT SYDNEY ROYAL
COFFEE COMPETITION
The Sydney Royal Coffee Competition has come to a close for 2011 with a number of tasty
blends hitting the right mark with industry professionals from across the country.
Part of the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show run by the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW
(RAS), the competition seeks to award excellence in Australian coffee production, and the results
show we have some fierce contenders in the global coffee industry.
A panel of 21 coffee experts sipped their way through 245 entries over three days of intense
judging in six classes including Espresso, Cappuccino, Plunger Coffee (small commercial),
Plunger Coffee (large commercial), Plunger Coffee (100% Single Origin Coffee, small
commercial) and Plunger Coffee (100% Single Origin Coffee, large commercial).
There were 20 new exhibitors at this year’s Show, taking the total number to 71.
Overall, quality was exceptionally high with 16 Silver and 83 Bronze medals being awarded to
exhibitors hailing from New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, South
Australia and Victoria.
Although no Gold medals were awarded, RAS Fine Food Committee Chair Kim Currie said
there was a record number of medals received across the board this year.
“This fantastic result indicates the level of quality across the industry is increasing and remains
stable,” Ms Currie said.
“In the 13 years since the competition was launched, only a small number of Gold medals have
been awarded. It’s really pleasing to see that the overall quantity of medals has risen to be the
highest ever.”
The Bean Barn, from Ballarat, Victoria, was a standout performer of the Show, picking up two
Silver medals for its two entries in the Espresso and Cappuccino classes.
Coffee lovers should also search out NSW based exhibitor Real Coffee, after they picked up five
Bronze medals for entries they placed in the Espresso, Cappuccino and Plunger Coffee classes.
Another notable winner was Maranatha Import Export, based in Sydney’s Castle Hill. They took
home five Bronze medals for their espresso, blends and single origin style coffees.
Baulkham Hills based Pine Tea & Coffee picked up six medals in total – including one Silver and
one Bronze for its Bella Italia Original in the Espresso and Cappuccino classes and three Bronze
medals in two Plunger Coffee (small commercial) classes.
Judges assessed each entry on criteria including visual aspects (green and roasted beans),
aroma, body and taste in terms of freshness, acidity, sweetness, bitterness, flavour, aftertaste
and balance.
Chairman of Judges Grahame Latham AM said Australian producers and roasters have been
improving each year and we are seeing much more attention paid to the quality of blends and the
standard of roasting.
Judge and General Manager of Cofi-Com Trading Andrew Mackay agreed, saying the high
degree of consistency among all exhibitors meant the overall standard was extremely high.
“The quality of roasting was far greater than we have ever seen before and the attention to detail
was exceptional,” Mr Mackay said.
“The record number of entries in this year’s competition is proof that the Australian coffee industry
is expanding and interest in our country’s coffee produce is expanding.”
